About Us

Because many dogs are given up for adoption each year due to unwanted behaviors, Patient Paws is dedicated to helping dogs become the best pet they can be as well as helping dog owners prevent or change unwanted behaviors.  Patient Paws provides an environment in which dogs can learn without the distractions of a large group class.

All training and behavior consultations are done by Ava Kamm M.S., a certified dog trainer and member of the International Association of Canine Professionals.  She is also a member of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Ava received her Masters degree in Zoology with an emphasis in Animal Behavior from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and her dog training certification from the National K-9 School for
Dog Trainers in Columbus, Ohio.

Along with obedience, she is also certified in puppy development,
behavior modification, assistance dog training, soft-mouth retrieval, scent detection and tracking.

Ava took graduate studies in dog training and the ForceFree Method of Dog Training with Marc Goldberg, IACP-CDT of http://www.ChicagoDogTrainer.com.

"I train dogs because I love them and because I have a passion to help people enjoy wonderful and improved relationships with their Best Friend," says Ava Kamm, MS.

"Studying Zoology at the masters level led to my career in working with dogs and their owners in the Peoria area. Keeping dogs safe, happy and well behaved in their Central Illinois homes is my passion," notes Ava.

Customer Testimonials

"Ava did a wonderful job working with Pepper, our spirited half Beagle and half Jack Russle Terrier. Pepper loves Ava and looks forward to her training times with Ava. Pepper is proud to say that she knows how to "sit", "down", "stay" and she no longer gets up on the tables!"- Gale Jesse (Morton, Il..)

"Ava did an outstaning job working with Bear. I was amazed after 1 week of in-home training that Bear learned how to 'sit, go down, stay, come and heel'. We have a much better mannered dog who is a pleasure to take on walks." -Gene Doubleday (Peoria, Il.)

"Ava trained me how to better train my 2 maltese babies. When we frst started, I lived in constant fear that Baylee would bite one of my nieces or nephews due to her aggressive tendencies and Bob would bolt out the door given any chance. Now my sweet Baylee is a different dog- she is obedient and I can now take food away from her without fear of being bit. With each training session, I grow more and more confident that I will one day be able to open my front door without the fear of having to chase down an 8lb. furball! I also appreciate that Ava has used different approaches for each dog. Since they both are unique in personality and health issues, Ava fit the training for the dog rather than trying to fit the dog in the training." -Jane Everheart (Peoria, Il.)

"Ava was awesome! I got this dog thrown into my lap & with her help I could cope with his behavior problems. She taught me so much & made me a better dog owner! Thank you Ava & Patient Paws." - Karla Franson (LiteRock 107)

"Our dog Buster came from a shelter and had obviously been abused. Ava, took her time with him and taught us basic training and then worked with us to help our neighbor feel safer around Buster. She even brought other dogs with her to help socialize Buster. He is now a happy healthy dog that we are able to live with. Thanks Ava." - Wendy Wright (Morton, Il.)

"Our PBGV, Zonkers, posed quite a challenge. 'Peebs' are smart, strong-willed hunters always looking for mischief- or creating some. Patient Paws was up to the task! "-Steve Heine & Karen Kendall (Peoria,Il.)
